Jio Platforms is eyeing a staggering valuation of Rs 10 lakh crore for its upcoming IPO, sparking heated debates among analysts on whether to pursue Jio or Reliance Industries shares. The IPO holds the potential for investors to capitalize on India's booming digital economy, focusing specifically on Jio's telecommunications prowess, while Reliance offers broader sector diversification.
With Jio Platforms seeking a Rs 10 lakh crore valuation in its IPO, analysts are divided over whether investors would be better off subscribing to the issue or buying shares of parent Reliance Industries. While some see greater value in RIL, given the discount on its Jio holding and its other businesses, others favour the telecom company for direct exposure to India's growing digital economy. At the upper end of its IPO price band of Rs 1,119, Jio Platforms is valued at Rs 10.3 lakh crore. Reliance Industries, which holds 66.43% of Jio before the offering, is expected to retain about 64.5% after the issue, giving its stake a market value of Rs 6.64 lakh crore.

The numbers have brought renewed attention to the valuation of Reliance Industries and whether investors could get Jio exposure at a more attractive price by buying shares of its parent company.
Arpit Jain, Joint MD at Arihant Capital Markets, said that applying a standard 30% holding-company discount to Reliance's stake in Jio brings its attributable value down to about Rs 4.65 lakh crore. This means investors buying RIL shares are also gaining exposure to businesses such as Reliance Retail, oil-to-chemicals (O2C), new energy and media, which Jain believes could offer attractive value at current valuations.

Reliance Retail generates annual EBITDA of around Rs 27,000 crore, while the O2C business contributes about Rs 80,000 crore. Its investments in renewable energy, green hydrogen and media could offer further long-term growth opportunities.
"Reliance Industries may appeal to investors seeking a diversified investment with potential value-unlocking opportunities across businesses, while Jio Platforms may be more suitable for those looking for focused exposure to India's digital and technology growth story," Jain said.
Why investors may prefer Jio IPO
For investors looking to participate directly in India's telecom and digital services growth, Jio offers a more focused investment opportunity. The company has more than 53 crore subscribers and has emerged as the country's largest telecom operator. Its growth prospects are supported by rising data consumption, improving average revenue per user (ARPU), expanding home broadband penetration and opportunities in enterprise services and artificial intelligence.

Jio reported revenue from operations of Rs 1.46 lakh crore in FY26, while net profit stood at Rs 30,049 crore. Its EBITDA reached Rs 76,255 crore, reflecting a margin of 51.9%.
The company is also moving beyond its capital-intensive 5G rollout phase, with management looking to improve profitability through higher customer spending and additional digital services.
Abhinav Tiwari, Senior Research Analyst at Bonanza, said Jio's direct exposure to these opportunities could attract growth-oriented investors. "With over 53 crore subscribers, rising data consumption, tariff hikes and opportunities in 5G, broadband and AI, Jio offers strong long-term growth potential," he said.
However, the valuation could limit immediate upside. At the upper price band, Jio is valued at more than 34 times FY26 earnings on its post-issue equity base, suggesting that investors are already paying for a substantial part of its expected growth.
Jio's IPO comprises 27 crore fresh shares, with no offer-for-sale component. The company plans to use up to Rs 27,500 crore of the net proceeds to repay borrowings at Reliance Jio Infocomm, potentially reducing interest costs and strengthening its balance sheet.
For investors, the benefit of owning Jio directly is that the company's future earnings growth and valuation changes will be reflected in its own share price, without the influence of Reliance's other businesses.
Can RIL shares offer better value?
Reliance Industries offers an alternative route to Jio's growth while providing exposure to several large businesses under one listed company. Its telecom and retail businesses offer structural growth opportunities, while the O2C segment remains an important source of cash generation. The company's new energy investments could also contribute to future earnings as projects become operational. However, RIL's diversified structure comes with a holding-company discount, as investors typically assign a lower valuation to a parent company's investments in subsidiaries than their standalone market values. Jio's listing will establish an independent market price for the telecom business, potentially making Reliance's underlying value easier to assess.
But analysts are divided on whether this will translate into meaningful gains for RIL shareholders.
Paresh Bhagat, Chairman of Mangal Keshav Financial Services, believes the expected benefits of Jio's listing have already been largely priced into Reliance shares. "We do not expect significant incremental value unlocking from Jio's listing, as the event has already been largely priced into RIL shares," he said.
Bhagat said diversification provides RIL with greater earnings stability, although the performance of its energy and other businesses will continue to influence returns.
While Jio offers a focused telecom and digital services investment, RIL provides a broader portfolio with possible value-unlocking opportunities across several businesses.
For investors seeking growth from expanding data consumption, broadband adoption and digital services, Jio could be the preferred choice. Those looking for diversified earnings and exposure to multiple sectors may find Reliance Industries more suitable.
Bhagat believes investors should exercise patience at current valuations. "At current valuations, we would prefer to wait for better entry points in both stocks rather than aggressively accumulate either," he said.
