The Ministry of External Affairs has reinforced that peace and tranquillity along the India-China border is essential for the overall development of bilateral ties. It confirmed that the situation in the border areas is periodically disturbed when Chinese forces deviate from established patrolling patterns.

“As we have noted in the past, the situation in the India-China border areas gets disturbed from time to time when Chinese forces diverge from established patrolling patterns,” MEA Spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal said at the bi-weekly media briefing on Friday.

Jaiswal was responding to questions about remarks made by the Director General of the Indo-Tibetan Border Police regarding Chinese skirmishes in Arunachal Pradesh.

“I would also like to emphasise that the maintenance of peace and tranquillity in the border areas is essential for the overall development of bilateral relations,” the Spokesperson said.

The statement comes amid continuing efforts by New Delhi and Beijing to stabilise ties, which plunged after the June 2020 Galwan Valley clash and the subsequent military standoff along the Line of Actual Control (LAC).

While the two sides have made progress towards normalisation since the October 2024 disengagement agreement, recent developments in Arunachal Pradesh underscore the fragility of the rapprochement. At their meeting on the sidelines of the BRICS Summit in September, Prime Minister Narendra Modi, too, had officially pointed out that peace and tranquillity along the border remained essential for the continued development of bilateral relations.

“Both sides continue to use existing diplomatic and military mechanisms to resolve outstanding issues and avoid misunderstanding and miscalculation along the Line of Actual Control. The two sides have also agreed to discuss ways to improve understanding of LAC in appropriate areas for better border management,” Jaiswal said.
